Around £12,000 raised at Wood’s annual Charity Ball

Press release – 28th November 2017

The glamour of the 1920’s hit the English Riviera on Saturday 4th November as the Imperial Hotel in Torquay hosted the highly acclaimed Black Tie Charity Ball, hosted by Woods Estate Agents & Auctioneers. Yet again, the event was a sell-out success – so popular, a waiting list was formed for those hoping to join the party and support the charity, many of which attended the After Dinner Party.

With the ladies looking fabulous in their finest gowns and the men oh-so dapper in their smart dinner jackets, the night started with great anticipation and excitement for the event organisers, Joyce Sharpe, Sarah Thomas & Rachel Green of Wood’s Estate Agents & Auctioneers.

Upon arriving at the ball, the 300 guests were greeted with a welcome drink before enjoying a three-course meal cooked by one of the hotels most excellent chefs.

The evening took centre stage in one of the hotels most popular function rooms with views over the sea and the magical lights of the bay from the dining room and adjoining lit terrace. To begin the evening a little differently, one lucky guest was awarded a Taste & Trek experience with Cheese & Wine at Sharpham Vineyard, after finding a lucky ticket under their wine glass.

The tables were decadent with alternating beautiful flower displays by Susan’s Florist and magnificent balloon displays lit by Samms Decorations of Torquay – both supporters of all nine of Woods Events. During dinner, guests were wowed by the optical illusions of two fine magicians, and £5 envelope tickets were sold – the lucky winner receiving a night’s stay for two at Buckfast Abbey with a tour of the grounds.

Following dinner, the evening’s main event – a charity auction with prizes including a VIP trip to meet the Red Arrows, a week in a Spanish villa, a stay in London at the Hilton with tickets to a show, a night’s stay in Datmouth with a Romanic Champagne Picnic Boat Cruise down the river and many other prizes which were listed in the programme.

For guests that did not feel up to the suspense of auction bidding, there was the opportunity to get in on the excitement by entering the draw with prizes donated from Hoopers, Riverford, Sainsburys and The Andrew Hill Salon to mention a few; together with a Silent Auction where prizes included golf days with overnight accommodation, a 17-bottle wine hamper, artwork, hampers, a gin-making experience, a Michael Kors handbag, pamper days and much, much more.

Some tried their hand in the casino, and the photo booth saw a lot of action while the pic’n’mix table proved extremely popular.

After the excitement of the auctions, the amazing The Loose Cannons band was in charge of warming up guests for a turn on the packed dance floor. One guest commented:

“The band was amazing, I have been to a lot of dinner and dances, and this is by far the best!”

Wood’s Estate Agents & Auctioneers – with the help and support of generous donators – were able to give each of the guests a gift bag to take away at the end of the evening. Gifts included cosmetics, vitamins, crisps, note pads, pens, money off vouchers, chocolates, magazines and much more.

Although there is still money coming in and money waiting to be counted and verified, with the kind help and support from everyone who helped and attended, the event raised a fantastic sum in the region of £12,000, to be split between Rowcroft Hospice, The Royal British Legion and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Sarah Thomas said:

“These are all such wonderful charities and very well deserving of the funds, we so appreciate all of the support we have been given from everyone. Every little bit helps!”
